Proposed branding suite for UNESCO World Heritage Site Lamu Old Town in Lamu, Kenya.
challenge
Develop a cohesive visual identity for a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lamu Old Town is a nexus of Swahili, Arabic, and Portuguese culture. Through the use of recurring motifs throughout the site, this identity both references the past and brings it into the present. The logo was developed taking elements from windows and decorative Swahili architecture. The open arches reference many doors and elements that were borrowed from Islamic architecture.
Drawing from the colors of the beach, ocean, and architecture, the color scheme breathes life into the brand. The deep blue, a reference to the deep blue of the Indian ocean. The rusty red, a reference to the Mediterranean-style roofs common through East Africa.
